Sparks Lake is near Mt. Bachelor and the South Sister (the mountain in the photograph) in central Oregon. Taken shortly after sunrise on a just above freezing, perfect morning.
The Painted Hills
The Painted Hills, a unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, get their name from the stratifications in the soil. The bands are from layers of silt, vegetative matter and more from the time this was an ancient river floodplain. The colored bands in the hills seem to change color with moisture levels and the angle of the sun overhead.
The hills are located about an hour east of Prineville, near Mitchell, Oregon
Mother and juvenile Hawaiian Spinner dolphins from the SW side of the island of Kauai.
St. Mary Lake
St. Mary Lake on the eastern side of Glacier National Park in Montana. Visible near the center of the photograph is Wild Goose Island. The lake is glacially fed and during the winter the surface freezes to an estimated four feet thick.
Calypso Bulbosa (Or Calypso Orchid, Fairy Slipper)
The plant, which lives no longer than five years, is a welcome sight when I am out. This one was about 100 feet/30 meters off the highway, off trail, in the woods of Silver Falls State Park.
A falcon, I believe a peregrine falcon, taken over Smith Rock State Park, just north of Redmond, Oregon.
This 30 foot/9 meter cascade over moss covered rocks is at the end of an easy hike from Clearwater campground just off of Hwy-138 east of Roseburg, Oregon.
A lorikeet from the Oregon Zoo in Portland. One if the few animals all visitors are able to touch, handle and feed. VERY friendly.
The lava flow from Belknap Crater forms a great foreground to the view of the North Sister and Middle Sister mountains (the South Sister is hidden behind the Middle Sister in this view). All three volcanoes are over 10,000 feet/3,000 meters in elevation.
An unidentified mushroom near Santiam Pass in Oregon
Tarweed Fiddlenecks and Fringepods
Two very cool sounding wildflowers taken in southern Washington, just north of the Columbia River in Horsethief Lake State Park.
Tarweed Fiddlenecks are the yellow flowers and the Fringepods are the discs.
Located at the Whitehorse Falls campground on Hwy-138 east of Roseburg, Oregon, you can see a view almost like this from the parking area. It may only be a 15 foot waterfall, but it is a gorgeous 15 feet...
Rainbow Eucalyptus bark from a tree on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai.
Along the Mosier Tunnel trail just outside of Hood River, Oregon.
A pronghorn antelope in the National Bison Range north of Missoula Montana. Widely considered to be the second fastest land animal on Earth (top speed second only to the African cheetah). The pronghorn antelope can reach over 50 mph/90 kph, but can also run long distance at over 35 mph/55kph.
Trailside near Bridal Veil Falls in the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon.
Sunrise at Sparks Lake with South Sister and Broken Top
Taken at sunrise on a cold clear morning at 34f/1c degree morning in August. I find it hard to believe that some people were still sleeping in their tents and not seeing this. A fantastic morning.
The South Sister is a dormant volcano, while Broken Top is an extinct volcano. Behind me is Mt Bachelor, another dormant volcano.
From Mayer State Park near The Dalles, Oregon.
Hawaiian Spinner dolphin from the SW side of the island of Kauai with its tail and nose in the water at the same time.
Blades of Grass
Simply drops of dew on blades of grass from my backyard.
Lower South Falls
One of the jewels of Silver Falls State Park in Oregon, this 93 foot/28 meter drop is well worth the hike.
Sparks Lake and the South Sister

Anthony Lake in eastern Oregon with (I think) Gunsite Mountain.
A deer near a cabin we rented near Sumpter, Oregon. Sumpter is a historic gold mining down in eastern Oregon near Baker City.
Bee on Thistle
A quick pic of a bee on a thistle weed in one of our pastures.
Upper North Falls
Typically a boring waterfall from the standard viewpoint, crossing the creek to this angle makes the 65 feet/20 meters look so much better! You can find it in Silver Falls State Park in Oregon.
This "concentrating" lion is at the West Coast Game Park Safari near Bandon, Oregon. It is walk though animal park where you can look at the animals, pet some, and feed some. No, you cannot feed the lions or tigers...
