The Painted Hills
The Painted Hills, a unit of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, get their name from the stratifications in the soil. The bands are from layers of silt, vegetative matter and more from the time this was an ancient river floodplain. The colored bands in the hills seem to change color with moisture levels and the angle of the sun overhead.
The hills are located about an hour east of Prineville, near Mitchell, OregonPronghorn Antelope
A pronghorn antelope in the National Bison Range north of Missoula Montana. Widely considered to be the second fastest land animal on Earth (top speed second only to the African cheetah). The pronghorn antelope can reach over 50 mph/90 kph, but can also run long distance at over 35 mph/55kph.
Sunrise at Sparks Lake with South Sister and Broken Top
Taken at sunrise on a cold clear morning at 34f/1c degree morning in August. I find it hard to believe that some people were still sleeping in their tents and not seeing this. A fantastic morning.
The South Sister (left) is a dormant volcano, while Broken Top (right) is an extinct volcano. Behind me is Mt Bachelor, another dormant volcano.
